Cataracts are the main reason for vision loss in people over 55 years of age. The cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye. The natural lens, placed behind the iris, works similarly to a camera – it focuses the light on the retina, which sends signals to the brain. It’s possible that the natural lens gets so cloudy that it can stop light and shapes from reaching the retina.

Damage to the eye, some diseases, even some medications can cause this clouding, but the most common reason for the development of a cataract is completely natural – the aging process.
First signs of cataract:
– Frequently, the clouding of the natural lens is firstly seen as heightened sensitivity to bright light.
– Then, the same effect is seen as in watching through a dirty windshield of a car. The dirtier the windshield is, the worse the driver is blinded by the lights of the vehicles opposite them. The image becomes more blurred and unclear the longer the cataract has progressed.
– The clouding of the lens can be quick, but it can also take many years. Eyesight with cataracts can be described as looking through an old, darkened curtain. This is why cataracts are also called “stern curtains”.

In the beginning stage of the disease, supplements and eye drops can be used. It is important to note that they do not treat cataracts and cannot restore vision but slow down the progression of the disease and improve metabolic processes in the eye. The only way to treat cataracts is a surgical intervention.
The operation consists of removing the cloudy natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and does not require a hospital stay. The anesthesia is local, either with drops or an injection.
