What is a cataract?
A cataract is a condition in which the internal lens of the eye clouds.
This condition can be characterized with slight to complete opacity and lack of ability of the light to go through the retina.
Clouding of the lens can occur quickly, but it can also develop over years. Eyesight in cataracts can be described as looking through an old curtain.
Prophylaxis and prevention
It is proven that exposure to direct sunlight contributes to the development of cataracts. Wearing sunglasses with a high degree of UV protection or a wide hat when being exposed to the sun can slow down cataract development. Wearing dioptric glasses also improves eyesight. A healthy lifestyle decreases risk of the disease.
People over 40 years of age who have a family history of cataracts should periodically get eye tests.
If you notice any of the cataract symptoms noted above, consult your ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
