Corneal abrasion consists of small scars, scratches or traumas to the cornea. The cornea helps focus light on the eye and plays an important part for vision. When the cornea is uneven vision can be impacted.
Corneal abrasions can often be prevented using protective glasses that protect the eyes during dangerous activities.
If you have corneal abrasion, you can feel the following symptoms:
- Pain that can worsen when you open or close your eyes
- The feeling of a foreign body in the eye
- Tearing
- Redness
- Light sensitivity
- Blurred vision or vision loss
- Headaches
Light corneal abrasion will resolve by itself in a few days. Your ophthalmologist can apply antibiotic eye drops or a cream or use steroid eye drops to decrease inflammation and decrease risk of scarring.
