Hyphema is the collecting of blood in the front part of the eye (also called the anterior chamber, between the cornea and the iris). The blood can cover the iris entirely or partially and block vision. The disease is usually caused by injury to the eye.
Unlike a hemorrhage that is usually a painless and harmless condition showing in the frontal part of the eye due to a broken blood vessel, the hyphema is usually painful and can lead to lasting vision issues if it is not treated properly.
Some causes can include:
- Eye infections caused by herpes virus
- Issues with blood clotting
- Intraocular lens issues
- Cancer of the eye
Some less severe cases of the disease can go away on their own. Based on the eye exam, your doctor will decide what the best treatment course for you is.
