The macular hole is a small “break” in the macular, responsible for detailed and central vision.
In the early stages of the development of a macular hole, symptoms can be not completely obvious. Your central vision will be blurred and malformed. If the whole “leaks” a blind spot is formed in the central part of the vision and the ability to see the farthest and closest distance is impaired. Symptoms of macular hole usually show in one eye only, as it is rather unusual to have a macular hole in both eyes.
Symptoms of a macular hole include:
- Decreased ability to see fine details
- Impaired vision, similar to looking through thick fog or wavy glass
- Dark or blind spot in the center of the vision field.
Vitrectomy (a type of surgery) is the most effective treatment for a macular hole and potential vision improvement. Macular hole surgery includes the usage of very small instruments to remove the fluid from the choroid body. Then, the eye is filled with a special gas to smooth over the macular hole and keep the retina in place while the disease is cured.
