Short-sightedness is a refractive mistake, which means that the eye doesn’t bend light correctly to a single focus so that we can see clearly. In short-sightedness, close objects look clear unlike those far away, which look blurred. Myopia is a common condition.

Myopia in children:

Short-sightedness is hereditary and often shows up in children between 8 and 12 years. In the teenage years, when the body grows rapidly, myopia can worsen. Between the ages of 20 and 40 only short-term changes usually occur. Myopia can also show up in adults.

Some signs and symptoms of myopia are tiredness of the eyes, headaches, slight closing of the eyes to focus properly.

Glasses or contact lenses are the most frequent ways to correct short-sightedness. They work by redirecting light on the retina by compensating for the deformation of the eye. Glasses can also help protect the eyes from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
