Innovative Project in the Field of Diagnosing Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

We are pleased to share that on November 22, the team of Vereya Medical Center presented the first results of an innovative project in the field of diagnosing diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Worldwide, these diseases are among the leading causes of permanent blindness. Thanks to the characteristic clinical signs detected through imaging studies, they provide an excellent basis for the development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) for more precise identification and diagnosis.

Over the past year, Vereya Medical Center, together with colleagues from several regions of Bulgaria, has been working intensively on the development of an innovative AI-based technique for the recognition and diagnosis of these diseases.

During the National Medical Forum Medica Zagora, Dr. Ivaylo Emilianov delivered an inspiring lecture in which he presented an algorithm developed jointly with Assoc. Prof. Dzhelebov and Assoc. Prof. Trifonova. The algorithm uses AI to analyze clinical signs from fundus photographs, supporting more accurate diagnosis of DR and AMD.

What have we achieved so far?

Better access to diagnostics:
The integration of AI into imaging devices provides innovative tools for the early detection of these diseases.

Improved treatment:
Precise diagnosis makes it possible to choose a more effective treatment strategy.

We are proud to have had the opportunity to present our work at this prestigious forum, and we thank all organizers and participants for their support and inspiration.
