Symptoms and diagnostics of cataracts

Reasons

Cataracts can be congenital, caused by trauma to the eye and systemic diseases, as well as some medications (especially steroids), but the most frequent cause for the appearance of a cataract is completely natural – the aging process

Symptoms of cataract

  • Blurred vision
  • Decrease in vision sharpness
  • Decrease in contrast vision
  • Worsened perception of color. Possible anomalies in seeing color.
  • Halo around light
  • Heightened sensitivity to getting blinded by light
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Light sensitivity
  • Frequent changes in diopters

Diagnostics

Diagnosing cataracts is done by a specialist ophthalmologist. With suitable devices, the eye doctor can determine the type, size and placement of the cataract.

The full examination includes taking anamnesis, checking vision sharpness, measuring eye pressure for eliminating the possibility that it is confused with glaucoma, pupil dilation and examining the structure of the lens.

Treatment of cataracts

In the beginning stage of the disease, supplements and eye drops can be used. It is important to note that they do not treat cataracts and cannot restore vision but slow down the progression of the disease and improve metabolic processes in the eye.

The only way to treat cataracts is a surgical intervention.
